What Are We Reading/Writing?

I hope to get several responses on this, because I am quite curious.  What fandoms do my friends read/write?  I always wonder if ya'll are devoted only to one fandom, or like me, you find yourself wandering from one to another?  I always come back to my first love, 'Bones', but I do wander frequently to 'Pirates', specifically anything with Capt. Jack Sparrow.

(Side note - a girlfriend and I had a lengthy debate the other day about David Boreanaz vs. Johnny Depp, and had quite a list of pros and cons for each.  I'll not bore you with the details here, but I think it was a tie - while David is taller, Johnny is well, Johnny.)

Can't wait to hear what holds our collective attention.

Hello :)

D'you know what, I was just pondering this the other day. I think it might have been after reading that terrific POTC fic you recommended. I like those films, and love Jack Sparrow - what sane woman wouldn't? But I hadn't thought about searching out fic before.

I have written both Doctor Who and X Files before (although I wrote the X Files many years ago before the net really took off - blimey I'm old!) and have since read both too.

With me I think it's all about the ship, sappy as that is. I followed the X Files for many years and as much as I found the concept of the show enjoyable, if it wasn't for the Mulder and Scully relationship I doubt I'd have kept watching for all that time.

With Doctor Who the same almost applies, although Rose/Ninth Doctor was my OTP and once they were cruelly torn apart (!) I kept watching.

The reason I think I end up reading / writing fanfic for these shows is because what we only dream of happening for the characters can and does happen in fic.

I've also read bits of Superman fic and Robin Hood (BBC), but haven't ever got as in to it as with Bones. It's the old chemistry thang! Plus the sheer hotness of David B of course.

Will be interested to see what everyone else reads/writes.

PS. This is the Ninth Doc and Rose, in case you have no idea what / who I am blithering on about x

My first fandom was JAG, which was back when I was first out of grad school and actually had free time for tv and the 'net. I can only imagine how awful I would have done in school had I discovered this world before graduation! 'Bones' is my true love, but I have found some fantastic authors in some other fandoms, particularly 'Pirates' (which feeds my Jack Sparrow obsession).

I've heard tell of this JAG before - what is it?

I feel the same re: the X Files and my degree. I never would have passed!

Maybe I should've got into fic writing *after* university instead of during... This does not bode well. :)

I can not imagine going to college and writing for pleasure at the same time. I truly commend you - and you write such great stuff too!

JAG was a very long-running US show about the Navy Judge Advocate General's office. The main character was played by David James Elliott, a former Navy pilot turned lawyer, and his partner, a Marine lawyer played by Catherine Bell. The man who plays on Cullen on 'Bones' was their boss, a Navy Admiral. They didn't get together until the very end of the series, and it went on for TEN LONG YEARS. The first season was all about him and she joined the series during season 2. Then it became all about will they or won't they, but it was against regulations, blah, blah, blah. Not to slam the show because I was a hard-core fan, but when I watch re-runs I'm like WTF? How did I make it for 10 years? That's too long to keep characters apart without wearing out your fans.

God, yeah. Should Bones last that long, I really hope they don't drag it out so far! I actually think the writing and supporting characters on Bones are strong enough to stand them being in a relationship - can well imagine the bickering between BB to continue for instance.

Mind you, X Files went on practically as long before they hooked up. I never felt completely satisfied with that either. Am looking forward to seeing the new film, see what, if any, relationship they are still meant to be having.

Ah yes ... the X Files movie...

That almost-kiss in the first one was what hooked me on the 'ship. Until then I had only seen an episode here or there, and wasn't into them as a couple. Very interested to see where this movie goes.
