Summer Reading List

Okay... so I haven't had a summer reading list since 11th grade, but it really seems like a good idea.  I really get into a rut with my reading; usually books for my bookclubs aren't ones I would have picked so other than those I tend to read a lot of the same authors over and over.  I'd love to compile a list to get through these next few months, so if anyone has any suggestions, I really hope you'll share.  Right now, on the burner I have:

Nineteen Days by Jodi Piccoult 
Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire

Once I've got a list I'll publish it, and anyone that wants to join me I'd love it!

I read Wicked a long time ago, but not so with Son of a Witch. I've been meaning to try Jodi Picoult. Let me know when you're going to read Nineteen Days; I'd love to join you.

I read Wicked just recently, and would like to read the sequel sometime while it's relatively fresh in my mind. Nineteen Days is first on the list though, so as soon as we get moved (long story, drama, etc.) I plan to start on it. I'll let you know when I get ready to get going on it. I have a real hard time making myself start a new book (unless its by an author I'm familiar with), but once I start I'm voracious. I'm so glad you'll be joining me *g*.

Son of a Witch was (in my opinion) not nearly as good as Wicked. Still worth a look, though, and if you like Gregory Maguire I'd check out Mirror, Mirror and Confessions of An Ugly Stepsister if you haven't already.

PS - I think I've read most of your fic over at Fanfiction.net (you're fabulous, by the way). If you don't mind, I'm adding you as a friend on lj (I keep track of my fic here so much easier!).

Thanks for that bit of advice about Son of a Witch. I'd heard that before, but I'm a sucker for sequels (and prequels, and trilogies, etc) so I'll probably have to read it to satisfy my curiosity.

Thanks for reading my stories, they are labors of love and I really appreciate the kind words. I'd love to get back to writing, maybe when RL slows down a little, or the new eps inspire me so much I can't stop myself :)

Have you read The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Nifenegger? That's fab. And being made in to a film too... always prefer the book when that happens though LOL :)

The last series I read was His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman - of which The Golden Compass is the first book. If you haven't already checked it out, I highly recommend it if you're into the fantasy genre (also, I don't know your religious leanings but I have a Christian friend who loved it, if that means anything).

Actually, I've been wanting to read the 'Golden Compass' and the rest of the series, so that I will definitely add to the list. As far as finding it offensive or whatever, as a Christian I think reading or listening to dissenting viewpoints is important, plus I've heard it's a really great series. Thanks for the rec!

A little while ago I read 'Twilight', by Stephenie Meyer, and then had to read all the rest of her ongoing series (second is 'New Moon', third is 'Eclipse', fourth is coming out this summer) and I absolutely loved all of them! :)

Of course, it depends a bit on what type of books you like. To give a very, very brief overview, it's a vampire romance story. They're pretty easy reads, but I couldn't put it down (may be partially due to the fact that I am sometimes a sucker for romance). It's a book that's starting to gain a lot of popularity, but I'm not sure how far it's gotten into the book world of adults.

Here's the little summary/blurb put on the back cover of 'Twilight'-It kinda explains it better than I can:

About three things I was absolutely positive:

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him–and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be–that thirsted for my blood.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

Oooh, I'm so intrigued. I'm a sucker for romance too, and after my three month immersion into the whole 'Angel' series, I'm an even bigger sucker for vampire romance.

Nora Roberts has a trilogy called the 'Circle trilogy' that starts with 'Morrigan's Cross', then 'Dance of the Gods', followed by 'Valley of Silence', that I highly recommend. It's her best in the supernatural/romance genre. She makes the idea of witches, slayers, vampires (both good and bad), etc., seem so plausible that it doesn't even seem like fiction.

Oooh, I'll definitely have to add those to my list of 'to read' books! Sounds very intruiging :D

I definitely will have to watch at least one episode of 'Angel' at some point, I've never seen one before.

I definitely recommend giving 'Angel' a try. It's an acquired taste, but I really enjoyed it. The first two seasons were a little bit lighter than the last three, but the 5th season was my favorite. let me know what you think if you ever decided to check it out.

Will it matter that I haven't watched Buffy before?

From what I've been told, you have a slightly different perspective if you've watched Buffy, but I never did and I think I'm glad. I got to know Angel, the character, and the others from BtVS (Cordy and Wes) as I watched 'Angel', instead of having preconceived notions of them. They give a lot of backstory during 'Angel', so you won't ever feel like you don't know what's going on. Let me know what you think!
